I really wanted to write this article because I had to dig through tons of articles and videos, but none of them were suited for India's climate. I got my Monstera cutting from my friend's dad's garden. If I'd bought it from a nursery, it would've come with the perfect soil mix. Sure, it’s a sweet (and free!) gift since these plants are crazy expensive, but that doesn’t mean I’m not taking care of it just because I didn't shell out a fortune for it.
So, let's talk about the perfect soil mix I used for my Monstera. Clearly, it’s working wonders since I'm now getting tons of leaves out of it.
Let's go?
It's got to be well-draining and packed with organic goodness to mimic its tropical home. Here's a recipe that actually works:
Ingredients:
- Garden Soil: 40%
- Cocopeat: 30%
- Perlite or Sand: 20%
- Compost or Vermicompost: 10%
Instructions:
- Garden Soil: Gives the plant its basic nutrients and structure.
- Cocopeat: Keeps the soil moist but not soggy.
- Perlite or Sand: Makes sure the water drains well and doesn’t drown your plant.
- Compost or Vermicompost: Adds the extra nutrients and good stuff plants love.
Repotting:
When you're repotting, just remember two things because you're basically evicting your plant from its old home. It's your job to make the move as stress-free as possible so it doesn’t throw a tantrum and stop growing.
First, try to make the soil mix as close to the old one as you can.
Second, don’t go crazy with the new pot size. Just pick one that's a bit bigger than the old pot, not a mansion.
Yes, it's that simple with this overhyped plant. Let me know in the comments if you want me to cover everything about Monstera—like light needs, propagation, watering, and more.
